XP Compatibility With Old Programs
Tip sent by
S. Haseeb Ahsan
One of the most powerful
features of Windows XP is its capability to run programs
designed for earlier systems, even DOS. If you have one of
those relics in your closet, dust it off, browse to the
application file for the program in Windows Explorer, right
click to Properties and click the "Run This Program In
Compatibility Mode For" box. Select the Windows version for
which the program was intended and click the Display
Settings checkbox appropriate for the program, if you know
the correct settings. Click OK, then double click on the
program file and take a step back in time.

Bed Wetting
An article by Mrs. Bilal Toor
According to
doctors a bed wetter is a girl older than age four and any boy
over age five. Bedwetting generally declines with age. About
10% of all six year olds and about 3% of all 14 year olds wet
the bed. In a very small number of cases, bedwetting can
continue into adulthood.
Chronic bed-wetting is thought to be related to (1) a
physically and/or neurologically immature bladder and/or (2) a
deep sleeping pattern. Apparently these children often sleep
so deeply that they are not aware of the message the bladder
sends to the brain saying it is full. It is presumed that
bed-wetting is an inherited condition. Usually a parent, aunt,
uncle, grandparent or other family member (s) will have had
the condition. Also, children with attention deficit disorder,
learning disabilities or allergies seem to be more likely to
be bed-wetters than children in the general population.
Effect of Bed-wetting on the Child and Family : As children
grow older they become embarrassed by their bed-wetting
condition. They try to withdraw from social activities that
require sleeping outside their home. They also often suffer
from low self-image. These children's feelings can be greatly
affected by the attitudes of their parents .Usually it is
observed that parents also feel frustrated, angry and
embarrassed about their children's bed-wetting condition.
Parents can help their children reduce negative feelings about
their bed-wetting condition and speed up the process of
overcoming it, by offering positive support, understanding and
encouragement.
Behavior Treatments : Behavioral treatment is often more
effective and certainly is safer than medical treatment.
However it may take longer periods to show improvement .
Retention control Training : The child is asked to control
urinating during the day by postponing it, first by a few
minutes and then by gradually increased amounts of time. This
exercise can extent the capacity of the bladder and strengthen
the muscle that holds back urination. Parents should always
check with a doctor before asking their child to practice
retention control.
Night-lifting : This procedure involves waking your child
periodically throughout the night, walking your child to the
bathroom to urinate, and then returning your child to bed. By
teaching your child to awaken and to empty his or her bladder
many times during the night, it is hoped that he or she will
eventually stay dry.
Moisture Alarm: An alarm consists of a clip-on sensor probe
that attaches to the outside of bed-clothing. An alarm is set
off when the child begins to wet the bed. The alarm wakes the
child, who will then go to the bathroom to finish back to
sleep. This slowly conditions the brain to respond
appropriately during sleep to messages from the bladder.
This treatment require a supportive and helpful family and may
take many weeks or even several months to work. Moisture
alarms have good long-term success and fewer relapses than
medications.

Inauguration of Dr.
Asim Ghani's 2 Poetry Books
(Ishaq Rana, Regional Editior, EP)Recently inauguration of Dr
Asim Ghani’s two poetry books “LUB BASTA” and “INAM
SHIKASTGAM” and Mehfil-e- Mushaira in his honor was held
at a corniche restaurant Al-Khobar. The beautiful occasion was
hosted and
arranged by Dr. Abid Ali and Shahnawz Kamil. Dr. Abid Ali
performed as stage Secretary. Mr. Malik E Ehsan, Ex Director
US State Department presented the books and presided this
mushira. Asif Ghani the author of books was Chief Guest. Poets
namely Siddiqi and paid tributes to Dr. Asim’s poetry books
and consider them a good addition in the “Urdu Adab”. They
said Dr. Asim Ghani is not only a good poet but also a nice
and helpful person. We have always seen him smiling. He is
lovable personality. The second part of the event was
mehfil-e-mushaira. Doctor Abid performed as Nazim Mushaira.
The poets that recited their poem included prominent poets
from Pakistan in the Eastern Province including Abid Ali,
Shahnawaz Kamil, Mehmood Shahid, Mohammad Akram Zahid, Nauman
Manzoor, Iqbal Qamar, Imran Bulkhi, Iqbal Farid Maisouri,

Rush of Umrrah Performers from the EP to Makkah and Madinah
(M. Ishaq
Rana Al-Khobar
Nov 25,
2002). The traffic of Umra and Hajj pilgrims to Makkah and
Madina has increased manifolds over the last few years since
private buses have started operating between EP and Makkah/Madina.
The discontinuation of travel paper has also increased the
traffic. Many Umra and Hajj transport companies operating
numerous buses have established in Khobar, Dammam, Al-Hassa
and Jubail. Tough competition has forced them to lower the bus
fair per trip to as low as SR 60 and 70 for normal weekend
days. With the price of SR 90, some transporters provide hotel
rooms in Makkah as well.
During Hajj and Ramadan seasons, hundreds of singles and
families of Muslims from
Bangladesh,
Pakistan, Sudan, Egypt, India and locals travel to Makkah. The
prices are drastically high during the Hajj season.
In Ramadan, the fair also increases depending on the tours.
There are 3-day to 7-day tours and the price tag of each trip
is different. The normal fair of 60 and 70 jumps to 150, 180,
200 and 250. As the 27th of Ramadan gets near the
fair starts increasing.
After Eid the fair is reversed. One is right to say that at
present, a thriving business in the
Eastern
Province is the transportation of Umra passengers from the
cities of
Eastern
Province to Makkah and Madina. There are Hundreds of Hajj and
Umra offices in the cities of Khobar, Dammam, Al-Hassa and
Jubail who have their own buses fleet.
A manager of one of the offices told me, “During Hajj and
Ramadan, we hire new buses from the neighboring countries to
meet the demand.” Answering my question about providing hotel
during Ramadan, he said, “We don’t commit to any accommodation
during Ramadan, as the prices of hotel rooms are sky high. If
a passenger insists, then we charge from 400 to 600 SR per
person per trip.”
The discontinuation of travel paper by the SAG has made the
travel to Makkah/Madina easier and frequent. The families and
singles are using this facility whenever they get a chance.
These activities have created new jobs and have enhanced the
economy of SAG and have provided good facility to the common
persons. |

Co
curricular activities at PISJ-ES (Cambridge)
(Syeda
Rakhshanda Kaukab, Jeddah) On 23rd October, Pakistan
International School, Jeddah (English Section) celebrated UN
Day. It was a pleasure for all students to wear casual dresses
that represented any country of the world.

In the junior section i.e. from Nursery to Grade 6, the
students presented
a variety of programmes. Nursery and reception kids sang poems
such as ‘Twinkle
Twinkle
Little Star’ and also
gestured with actions. Then the Grade 1 performed a skit on an
English song.
Grade 2 students recited Naat, Pakistani songs and Turkish
anthem. These programs
fascinated the audience, as the performance was spectacular.
Grade 3 acted on cartoons such as ‘Sleeping Beauty’. The
lovely English songs sung by the Grade
4 students left the spectators spellbound. The poems gave the
lesson of maintaining unity, abandoning the prejudice of cast,
colour, and creed, and helping the poor. Grades 5 and 6
displayed dramas such as ‘The Ancient Egypt’ (The one about
the Pharaohs and their reign), and were much admired by the
audience.

After the juniors, the senior section, consisting of Grades
7-11, had a debate competition ‘Pen is mightier than the
Sword’. Most of the finalists wore the national Pakistani
dress (Shalwar Kamiz). All of them were extremely confident
and well prepared, rendering it hard for the judges to decide
the winner.
At the end of the day, there were class parties. The day was
made successful by the guidance and planning of the teachers
-- especially the Headmistress Mrs. Meher Afroz Afridi and
Deputy Headmistress, Junior School, Mrs Al Baiz.

SIND
Sind is the third largest
province of Pakistan. To its west and north- west is the
Province
of Balochistan, to the northeast is
Punjab, to its south and southeast is
India and to its southwest is the
Arabian Sea.

Major cities of
Sind include the port city of
Karachi, which also happens to be the largest port of
Pakistan. It is also the largest city of the country in terms
of population. Sukkur, Hyderabad, Larkana and Jacobabad are
other major cities. Karachi, the largest and the most populous
city is a colorful combination of the old and new. There are
narrow twisting lanes and alleys of the old city throbbing
with life along-side the wide metalled roads and elegant
modern buildings.
About 64 kms (40 miles) east of Karachi is the famous
archaeological site Bhambore. Some scholars identify it with
Debal, the port city where the Arab General Mohammad Bin Qasim
