'Human-to-human' bird flu fears

chicken

The father of a Chinese man who died of bird flu has also been infected with the virus, raising fear of human-to-human transmission.
The World Health Organization said it could not rule out the possibility that the H5N1 virus had spread from the son to the father.
For the most part, humans have caught the virus from sick birds.
Scientists fear if the virus gains the ability to pass easily between humans, tens of millions of people could die.
A statement on the Chinese ministry's website said a 52-year-old man in eastern Jiangsu province identified only by his surname, Lu, has been confirmed with the virus, just days after his 24-year-old son succumbed to it on 2 December.
The father began presenting symptoms on Monday and was confirmed as having the virus on Wednesday. He is being monitored in hospital.
It is also possible that both men were infected by the same source, or that they were infected separately from different sources.
Since the H5N1 virus emerged in South East Asia in late 2003, it has claimed some 200 lives around the world. Indonesia has been hardest hit, with more than 90 deaths.
Of the 26 cases confirmed to date in China, 17 have been fatal.
Suspected human-to-human transmission of H5N1 has been reported in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Indonesia, but none of the cases have been proven.

In English (PDF, 2.2 MB)

You may have heard people talking about how the weather is very different today than it was ten years ago. You may have noticed changes in the weather yourself. The earth's climate has changed many times over millions of years, sometimes slowly, sometimes very quickly. What makes climate change different today?
The world's scientists agree; human activity - mainly greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels for energy - is now causing the Earth's climate to change incredibly fast, taking us far outside natural ranges and towards 'tipping points' beyond which very large-scale consequences may be irreversible. The latest research from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for its work, has found that the impacts of climate change are already being felt around the world. The impacts are overwhelmingly negative and will affect poor and vulnerable communities first and hardest. These communities are often the least responsible for causing the problem and have the fewest resources to adapt to the rapid changes.
Present day warming has caused a broad range of negative consequences and will continue to create far more unless stopped. The most direct effects of current climate change are on temperature and precipitation patterns. As of 2006, all eight of the hottest years ever recorded were from the last 10 years. As this warming continues, established weather systems will shift and become more extreme, resulting in both more droughts and floods. As sea surface temperature rises, weather-disturbing El Nińo events will become more frequent and powerful. Meanwhile, larger, more severe hurricanes, which feed on the heat of ocean waters, will threaten coasts. This trend may already be visible: the last two decades have seen a sharp increase both in the frequency and power of hurricanes.
Shifts in temperature and precipitation will be a shock to fragile ecosystems which depend on specific climatic conditions. Many species will be unable to adapt as fast as their environment changes and face sharply reduced numbers or extinction. Scientists estimate that a warming of just 2˚C will put as many as 30% of the world's species at risk of extinction.
Plants and animals aren’t the only ones feeling the pressure of changing ecosystems. Many regions will face severe water shortages in a warmer world, creating the potential for conflict. It is believed that the genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region is at least in part a response to water shortages resulting from global warming.
Climate change is arguably the greatest danger facing humanity in the years ahead. In many ways, its effects are already being felt and it is too late to prevent warming entirely. However, the situation is not without hope. Though urgent action is needed, through the combined efforts of governments, businesses, scientists, and individuals, it is still possible to stop even greater tragedies and protect the health of our planet for future generations.

Leadership
Leadership knows no age Nor is it limited by race. It is conspicuous in its presence or absence from nations capitals to neighborhood playgrounds. You can see it in a young athlete's quick feet. You can hear it in a grandfather's slow story. Leadership can be an hour of triumph Or a moment of prayer. It is saying "Yes" to the right kind of responsibility and saying "No" to the wrong kind of temptation. Leadership does not gloat in victory nor can it ever be vanquished. For it is an elegance of conduct which transcends either!

How do viruses, worms, and Trojan horses get onto my computer?

These days, computers usually get infected through email attachments, Internet downloads, instant message attachments, and other types of network based file exchange. Increasingly, malicious code can be triggered simply by visiting a website or viewing a message in the preview pane of your email program. You should also be cautious whenever you insert or attach anything that can copy files to your computer, such as a CD, DVD, or portable disk drive.  You should have good anti-virus and firewall software to minimize your risk.

One God - One People

Hajj is a great universalizer. Each year, it leaves us with one memorable message. We, the Muslims, are one people, one Nation, one Group, one Party, and one UMMAH. With Hajj, the infinite wisdom of Allah made it impossible for his believers to be segregated into nations, languages, regions and colors. The Hajj says, simply put, there is no American version of Islam, just as there are no Saudi or Egyptian versions. The Hajj institutes and realizes the truthful statement of our Merciful Lord: “Indeed this UMMAH of yours is one UMMAH and I am your Lord, so worship me.” [21:92]

Dear Sirs, No doubt, ContactPakistan is serving the community honestly and very effectively,   I sincerely thank the whole team of ContactPakistan for its sincere efforts and welfare activities. You have many sections where the experts are helping the community by their precious advice and/or by other means.  I have another idea!
It happens every year that we suddenly get a call from Pakistan that a Pilgrim is coming and we have to see him.  We, then, call Pakistan House at Makkah, whose telephone lines are often busy, to find out the whereabouts of the Pilgrim.  Sometimes, due to lack of information, it takes much time to locate the Pilgrims.  So wouldn’t it be a nice idea to build a Pilgrims Data-Bank website to locate the Pakistani Pilgrims? I believe, you have excellent web designers and you do have contacts with the Pakistani Consulate and other Govt. Departments in Pakistan.  So why not get the data from the concerned authorities and put it on the web so anyone who is trying hard to trace his Hajjies can easily get the required information. Many countries have already posted data-bank of their pilgrims on the web and are maintaining regularly. I am sure it is not a difficult task for you and your team and hope that you will consider my suggestion. I am not a web designer, but if I could be of help to you in any ways, I offer my services whether it is a financial support,  inputting the data, or updating the pilgrims information etc. Please let me know if the above is implement able and how can I be of help to you.  I know it is too late, for this year, but “something is better than nothing”.  Maybe we can start this year with as much information as possible and implement it in its full swing for the next Hajj. May Almighty Allah reward you and your team for the welfare works!  Best regards,
Islamuddin Omer, Jeddah.

Dear Bhai,
JazakAllah Khair for coming up with this excellent idea. Thank you sir!
We gave some thoughts to your idea and found that data mining will be quite a big job. At the same time technicality and integration of the date involved in such project requires few months of planning. Manual entry of each Haji arriving on an online web base database is out of question considering the workload all the Govt. staff would have during the season. The best shot is to find if there is any Govt. web site that offers such service to public. I am copying this mail to brother Fahad who is our contact at Jeddah consulate. He may have some idea?
Over to you Fahad Bhai.
Regards

I want to recycle my old cell phone, but I'm not sure how. Any advice?

Recycling an unused mobile phone is a great idea. Some great resources include web sites like recyclemycellphone.org, recycleforbreastcancer.org and charitablerecycling.com.  By recycling, you are protecting the environment (the phone won’t end up in a landfill), plus you have an opportunity to support a charity of your choice. Cell phone recycle programs usually provide a checklist of steps to take before donating an old mobile phone, including disconnecting your service and manually erasing your address book.

 Sacrifice
Aassalam-O-Aliakum!
Dear friends, Eid-ul-Azha is just around the corner. The essence of this Eid is the spirit of sacrifice. Hazrat Ibrahim and Hazrat Ismail readily bowed their head to Allah's commandment to give sacrifice demanded of them.
In the materialistic world of today, the spirit of sacrifice is diminishing. People are becoming more and more self-centered and selfish. According to the saying of Holy Prophet, a true Muslim is one who likes the same for his fellow brother that he likes for himself. When our grandparents tell us about their times, we realize that earlier people used to be generous and full of dignity. They would not hesitate in providing help to anyone, anywhere. But the fast emerging culture of chasing the materialistic standards has lessened these good characteristics that were earlier emblems of humans.
If your car breaks down on a busy road, hardly anyone will stop by to help you. If someone does stop, it comes as a surprise for us and it is mentioned as something noteworthy. We need to promote the culture where being generous and helpful is not something rare. Helping one another should not come as a surprise. We must never turn a deaf ear to those who are truly in need. To reform the society, we first need to reform our self. We shall be mindful of Allah, by following the Quran and Sunnah. A good Muslim fulfills the rights of Allah and the rights of His creation.
Thousands of people are dying because they do not have food to eat, or medicines to buy for themselves. And there are a bunch of people who have so much that they lavishly spend on designer items and other luxuries. If only, the rich people could cut down some of their lavish expenditures and help a poor with the saved money. The satisfaction one gets from helping the poor and needy is much more and far greater than the satisfaction of buying an expensive designer stuff. I remember munching my favorite chicken burger once, while I was waiting for the traffic signal to turn green. There I saw a beggar child looking longingly at me. I just could not eat anymore and handed the burger to the poor child. I still smile and feel happy when I recall the wide smile that brightened the poor boy's face.
Though in this hi-tech era, people have got busy and appear to be self-centered, but surely goodness still exists in people. Rarely but surely do we witness such incidents that reflect that deep down humanity with all its righteousness still exists and hence we can always hope for things to become better.
Till next time, AllahHafiz. And Eid Mubark.
Ms. Amna Tariq Holy City of Makkah-Ul-Mukarrama
