If your refrigerator is more
than 10 years old, it could be using twice the energy of a
new one and costing you twice as much in power bills. If
you've been thinking about getting a new refrigerator,
energy efficiency is a good excuse to go shopping today.
The fridge used to be one of the major energy hogs in the
house, but industry innovation, encouraged by government
standards, forced efficiency gains that reduced power
consumption almost 75% even as the size of refrigerators
went up significantly. That's great news. But even though
the average efficiency has greatly improved, you can still
end up with a fridge that consumes 50% more than a
comparable model of the same size.
You need to look for two things: first is the ENERGY STAR
label, which indicates the fridge beats the federal standard
by at least 15%. But ENERGY STAR alone is not enough. You
also need to look at the EnergyGuide -- a card posted on or
inside the fridge if you're shopping at the store -- because
it will tell you the fridge's annual energy consumption as
well as how that fridge compares to others of similar size.
Ultimately, to save the most money and make the greatest
contribution to reducing your fridge's greenhouse footprint
you ought to be on the lookout for the model with the lowest
energy consumption estimate (measured in kWh/year) -- and it
may or may not be the smallest refrigerator!
Remember that you pay for your new refrigerator when you buy
it and then every month when you pay your utility bill. If
you buy an energy efficient model, you will save money every
year, up to $50 or more, which adds up over the life of the
refrigerator.
If you're shopping for a new fridge, here's how to get the
biggest climate bang (and utility bill savings) for your
buck:
Check with your local
utility to see if they have a rebate program to help you
pay to replace your old refrigerator.
Design:
Freezer-on-top models use about 20% less energy than
comparably sized side-by-side models and among available
ENERGY STAR models, they're also generally better than
freezer-on-bottom. Automatic ice makers, water coolers,
and flat panel televisions also increase power
consumption.
Whatever you decide,
do go ENERGY STAR and look at the ENERGY GUIDE. A 16
cubic foot Sun Frost uses just 204 kilowatt hours a year
compared to 553 for a 20 cubic foot Kenmore
side-by-side. But both are much less than the typical
2001 US refrigerator consumption of 1239 kWh per year.
Remember that one
store may not carry the most efficient models so a
little comparison shopping can help.
Don't park your old
model in the basement or the garage. If you're going to
fire it up once a year as a dedicated beer cooler for
your 4th of July bash, fine. But if you keep it plugged
in just for backup you'll take a big home efficiency
step backwards.
Make a soft fluffy omelet
Heat a non-stick pan and add a little more butter than
usual. Now beat the egg and stir briskly (even while frying)
with a fork. This way more air goes in your omelet, making
it light and fluffy. Fry till done and serve hot.
LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Mars could be in for an asteroid hit. A
newly discovered hunk of space rock has a 1
in 75 chance of slamming into the Red Planet
on Jan. 30, scientists said Thursday.
"These odds are extremely unusual. We
frequently work with really long odds when
we track ... threatening asteroids," said
Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near
Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory.
The asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, was
discovered in late November and is similar
in size to an object that hit remote central
Siberia in 1908, unleashing energy
equivalent to a 15-megaton nuclear bomb and
wiping out 60 million trees. Scientists
tracking the asteroid, currently halfway
between Earth and Mars, initially put the
odds of impact at 1 in 350 but increased the
chances this week. Scientists expect the
odds to diminish again early next month
after getting new observations of the
asteroid's orbit, Chesley said.
"We know that it's going to fly by Mars and
most likely going to miss, but there's a
possibility of an impact," he said.
If the asteroid does smash into Mars, it
will probably hit near the equator close to
where the rover Opportunity has been
exploring the Martian plains since 2004. The
robot is not in danger because it lies
outside the impact zone. Speeding at 8 miles
a second, a collision would carve a hole the
size of the famed Meteor Crater in Arizona.
In 2004, fragments of the comet
Shoemaker-Levy 9 smacked into Jupiter,
creating a series of overlapping fireballs
in space. Astronomers have yet to witness an
asteroid impact with another planet.
"Unlike an Earth impact, we're not afraid,
but we're excited," Chesley said.

Liver damage 'could be reversed'
Some
liver damage caused by heavy drinking or
hepatitis could be halted or even reversed,
claim researchers.
US researchers say that the growth of
scarring around the organ might be stopped
by blocking a vital protein which helps it
to form.
The research, in the journal PLoS Online,
could also eventually help patients with
lung problems and burns.
The British Liver Trust said that any
treatment which lessened scarring would help
patients.
Heavy alcohol use and hepatitis can lead to
a process called fibrosis in the liver,
which involves the formation of excessive
scar tissue. Cirrhosis happens when this
scarring becomes too severe, interfering
with the way the liver works.
Currently doctors can do little more than
try to prevent more damage by changing the
patient's lifestyle or treating the virus
which caused it.
Damage reversal?
The researchers at the University of
California at San Diego School of Medicine
have halted the formation of the scar tissue
by blocking a protein called RSK, which is
released naturally by the body as part of
the healing process.
The scientists used mice with severe liver
fibrosis, some of which were given a
chemical which countered RSK.
Those mice had no further liver fibrosis,
while those who didn't receive the chemical
showed signs of more damage.
Dr Martina Buck, who led the study, said she
felt that the treatment might be able to go
further, and actually repair damage already
caused.
"Our latest finding proves that we can
actually reverse the damage," she said.
The researchers said that other conditions
involving fibrosis, such as pulmonary
fibrosis and scarring around burn injuries,
could also potentially benefit.
A spokesman for the British Liver Trust said
that the research was promising: "This is
clearly in very early stages and the real
test will be when a treatment is developed
to safely block progression of damage in the
livers of patients with liver disease and
reverse their fibrosis.
"Irrespective of whether cirrhosis is fully
reversible there is clearly a lot of benefit
to be derived from reducing the amount of
liver fibrosis as this allows the liver
cells to resume normal function."

This is probably not the first time you’ve
seen this list. But how many of these easy
changes have you actually made?
1) 1°C on your thermostat accounts for 4% of
your household energy use.
Turn your thermostat down by 1°C. Total
saving: 4% of your total household energy
use.
2) Replace your light bulbs with energy
saving ones. They use just 20% of the energy
of traditional bulbs and last 12 times
longer. Total saving: 0.3% of your total
household energy use for replacing three
bulbs.
3) Turn them off when you’re not using them.
Lights, TV, computer, mobile phone charger.
Use your appliances efficiently: only boil
the water you need in the kettle, hang
washing up instead of using a tumble drier,
totally fill the dishwasher and washing
machine up before putting them on. Total
saving: 1.1% of your total household energy
use.
4) Make fuel efficiency a priority when
buying a car Car
Cut down journeys: use public transport,
cycle or walk. Car share where possible.
Drive at a lower speed to increase fuel
efficiency. Consider a more fuel efficient
model when buying a new car.
5)Try to buy food with less packaging.
Reduce the amount of packaged products you
buy, reuse shopping bags and recycle
newspapers. Apply the ‘three Rs’ to
everything you can to reduce manufacturing
energy costs.
6) Cut down journeys: use public transport,
cycle or walk. Car share where possible.
Drive at a lower speed to increase fuel
efficiency. Consider a more fuel efficient
model when buying a new car.

While terrestrial and atmospheric phenomena are
directly affected by temperature change, no one
could've conceived it to impact the dynamics of
the tectonic plates. But here we are -
scientists are now studying a plausible link
between glacial melting and increase in tectonic
activity.
While this piece - written over a year ago -
talks of this phenomenon in Alaska, it can be
ominously applied to a similar situation
elsewhere on the globe. We have Northern
Pakistan sitting on the confluence of the Indian
and Eurasian plates - with active fault lines.
And we also have the largest non-polar glaciers
in the world in this region, which we know to
be melting at more than their previous rates,
and in some cases, are receding quite
dramatically.
Would this melting increase the tectonic
activity under this region causing earthquakes
at an increased frequency?

I just bought a new
laptop. Is there a safe way to transfer my data from my old
computer to my new one without destroying files?
Newer Macs and PCs allow you to use a cable to
make such transfers simple. If you have a Mac, you can use
an Apple Firewire cable to connect your computers and
instantly transfer your content and settings to your new
laptop -- just follow the few steps that come with your new
Mac's manual.
For a Windows-based laptop, try using Microsoft's Easy
Transfer Cable, which works the same way. Otherwise, you can
try manually transferring your old files and settings an
external hard drive and then transferring them to your new
computer.

Japan
is the latest country to introduce a ban
on inefficient incandescent light bulbs
following the likes of Cuba, Venezuela,
Australia and Ireland. Much to our
delight, the Japanese government is keen
to
move from incandescent bulbs to
energy-saving compact fluorescent ones
to reduce carbon emissions and energy
use.
Why can’t our own government take
inspiration from these countries and ban
power hungry bulbs for good?
The global trend is moving from
conventional technologies to more
eco-friendly ones as we saw in the case
of Ireland where the incandescent bulb
was banned a couple weeks ago. If we
were to ban power crazy bulbs here we
would cut our carbon emissions by
millions of tonnes. Although the
specifics of the ban are still in the
pipeline, we would like to congratulate
the Japanese government for taking this
step. Almost 2 million tons of carbon
dioxide will cut if all homes in Japan
bin the incandescent bulb for the CFL.

Dear all
During the last few weeks there has been quite an
flow of email to CP regarding the Burglary & Thefts,
also thanks to the community leaders we now have a
procedure to report such incidents. These are all
post
burglary & thefts procedures and sadly the damage is
already done!
What we need is a campaign to bring an awareness as
to how to prevent such incidents or minimize the
loss. Some of the best practices I can immediately
think are:
1. Don't keep cash in your home, always use banks.
If this is done then 50% of the loss is immediately
prevented.
2. Don't keep your jewelry in the most obvious place
like bedroom cupboard.
3. Lock all room doors before leaving the house.
This will make accessibility difficult for the
burglars.
4. Always keep your bathroom and kitchen windows
closed.
5. It won't be a bad idea to invest in a wireless
web cam if you already have a computer. These can
record itself with every movement in the room. You
can activate it before leaving the house.
6. Make sure your main door has an additional lock
and its locked every time.
7. Request the watchman to be extra alert during the
men working hours and specially during Fridays.
8. Always be alert and vigilant of suspicious people
around your building who could be actually
monitoring your movement.
9. If budget permits invest in a good safe to keep
all your valuables.
We would like to welcome all the members to share
their best practices and ideas to prevent these
incidents and minimize the losses. Engr. Iqbal A.

Do Good Have Good
Assalam-O-Aliakum!
Hope you all are hale and hearty. May Allah always keep us
all blessed with His bounties. Ameen
The topic today must have sounded familiar to many of you
who have read the so many stories with the said moral- "Do
Good Have Good". These all time popular stories include the
story of "The mouse and the rat", "The dove and the bee"
etc. These parables tell us how one gets help in time of his
need as a reward for assisting others when they were in hot
waters. For example, in the story of "The Dove and the Bee",
the dove drops a leaf in the pool to save the bee that was
drowning. Later that bee saves the dove's life when a hunter
tried to shoot down the dove.
Life can be compared to a wheel -a wheel that is constantly
rotating. At a certain point of time, a particular group is
at advantageous position. Then as the wheel turns, this
group goes in the upside down position and those who were
earlier at bottom come at a safer position.
Consider the story I just mentioned about the bee and the
dove. There was a day when the bee's life was at risk. The
dove sitting safely on the nearby tree's branch had two
choices: ignore the bee and let it drown or do whatever can
be done to save the drowning bee. The dove would have never
imagined that this bee would be of any help to me ever. Just
out of sympathy, the dove made an attempt to save the bee.
Look at the wheel of fortune… it turned (and it always
does). Just few days later came a situation where bee became
the savior and dove - the one being saved.
Folks, we must extend our help to all those who need it. We
shall do so with the intention to get reward from Allah
Almighty. Try helping someone in his troubled times, and you
will see how much satisfaction you will feel in your heart.
Imagine the prayers this person will make for you. Remember
as the wheel of fortune turns, those who have been at the
bottom may one day find themselves at the top and vice
versa. With this didactic note, I bid you Good bye for now Ms. Amna
