MANGO CHEESE CAKE

- 1\4 cup butter
2 cups crushed digestive biscuits,
-
2 large ripe mangoes
- 3 oz packet mango or pineapple flavored gelatin ( such as jell-o brand)
- 1 1\2 tsp. unflavored gelatin
- 1 tsp. tbsp. lemon juice
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 2 8-oz pkgs. Philadelphia brand cream cheese
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 1 tsp. vanilla essence

1. Lightly oil a 9 inches (24cm) spring release cake tin. Line the base with greaseproof paper and grease the paper.
Make the Base:
2. Mix together the melted butter and biscuit crumbs. Press the crumb mixture into the base of the prepared pan and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Make the Filling:
3. With a sharp knife, peel the mangoes and scrap the flesh from the stone. Discard the stone and chop or mash the flesh.
4. Boil 1\2 cup water in a small saucepan, remove from heat, add jelly, gelatin, lemon juice and sugar, stir to mix and keep aside for 3 minutes. Return the saucepan over low heat and stir until gelatins and sugar is dissolved. Cool slightly, add mango flesh then refrigerate until thickened but not set, stirring occasionally.
5. Put the cheese in a large bowl and beat with an electric beater until smooth, about 2 minutes. With a balloon mixer fold the cooled mango mixture into the cheese.
6. Working quickly, in another bowl beat cream and vanilla until, it is the same consistency as the cheese mixture. Then lightly fold in the cheese mixture. Pour into the biscuit crust and refrigerate or chill until set, about 6-8 hours.
7. Carefully remove the sides of the cake tin then using a blade knife or spatula loosen the base and slide the cake off the base onto the serving plate. Decorate with mango slices, if wished.

To prevent potatoes and apples from turning brown after slicing,
put them in room temp. water and pour half teaspoonful of salt.

Treat knee pain with creams call
Ibuprofen
This is an important message for GPs and patients - that they should consider topical treatments to avoid side effects

Gels or creams containing painkillers are better than tablets for chronic knee pain, NHS research suggests.
A study of almost 600 patients aged over 50 found the anti-inflammatory creams worked as well as the oral versions and had fewer side-effects.
And although they cost more initially, topical treatments may save the NHS money in the long run, the Queen Mary University of London researchers said.
It is estimated that a third of over 50s suffer from knee pain.
In half of those the problem is classed as severe.
The most common cause of pain in the knee is osteoarthritis - a condition caused by abnormal wearing of the cartilage.
A total of 585 patients from 26 general practices around the UK took part in the study which looked specifically at non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) - a class of drugs which includes ibuprofen.
Both tablets and creams containing the drugs had the same effect on knee pain, the study showed.
But those treated with oral medication had more minor adverse effects such as indigestion, increased blood pressure, or worsening asthma. Uncertainty
NSAIDs are well-known to be associated with sometimes serious side effects but the topical preparations deliver a smaller dose directly to the affected area and so are less likely to cause such problems.
Patients also preferred the gels and creams, the study which is published on the National Institute for Health Research website. Study leader Professor Martin Underwood, who has since moved to Warwick University, said there had been uncertainty about which to use.
"There has been quite a lot of discouragement about using topical NSAIDs because it was thought they were more expensive and there was not good evidence they were beneficial." He added that patients with more widespread pain may find tablets are better and should discuss the choice with their GP.
Royal College of GPs chairman Professor Steve Field said he had always been of the view that oral NSAIDs worked better.
"This is an important message for GPs and patients - that they should consider topical treatments to avoid side effects."
An Arthritis Research Campaign spokeswoman said GPs had probably under-prescribed topical creams in the past because they did not believe they were as effective.
"But this new research appears to show they both as effective and safer, with fewer of the side affects associated with NSAID tablets," she added.

TRAVEL TIPS

How can I improve plane travel?
Most people don't have any problems when they fly, but it's possible to make airplane travel safer and more comfortable. Here are some tips:

  • Carry enough of all of your medicines in your carry-on luggage. Ask your doctor whether you should change your dosages if your eating and sleeping times will change at your destination. Bring enough medicine to last your whole trip. Take extra medicine with you in case your return trip is delayed.
  • If you have diabetes or epilepsy, carry a notification and identification card. Have the name and phone number of your doctor with you in case of an emergency. Remember to bring along the names and dosages of all of your medicines.
  • The air in airplanes is dry, so drink nonalcoholic, decaffeinated beverages and water to avoid becoming dehydrated.

What can I do about jet lag?

  • Get plenty of sleep before you leave.
  • Eat well-balanced meals.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Exercise as much as you can on your trip.
  • Use sleep medicines for only a few days.
  • Get used to a new time zone by going along with the local meal and bedtime schedules.

Melatonin may help with jet lag, but no one knows how long it can be used safely. Tell your doctor if you plan to take melatonin or any other herbal or alternative medicines.
What about pain in my ears?
If your ears hurt when you fly, try taking a decongestant medicine (such as pseudoephedrine) before you get on the plane. You can also swallow often and chew gum during the flight. Babies can suck on bottles or a pacifiers during the flight.

Mars' two-faced riddle 'solved'

Artist's impression of Mars impact (Jeff Andrews-Hanna)

The puzzle of why the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars look so different may now have been solved.
Mars' crust is thicker in the southern hemisphere, and magnetic anomalies are found in the south but not the north. New studies in Nature magazine suggest that a massive space rock smashing into the planet could have created an abrupt disparity between the two halves.
This asteroid would have been close to the size of Earth's moon and hit Mars' northern regions, scientists say.
According to one group of researchers, the rock struck with an energy equivalent to one million billion atomic bombs like the one dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.
Mars' northern hemisphere is an enormous lowland basin which might once have held a mighty ocean. The southern hemisphere, on the other hand, comprises rugged, crater-pitted highlands with an altitude up to 8,000m (26,000ft) greater than the north.
The new research suggests Mars bears the largest impact scar known anywhere in the Solar System. It challenges an alternative theory which proposes that the "two faces" of Mars are the result of enormous volcanic disruption 3.8 billion years ago.

Deep impact

The scientists on the latest work used data from two Mars-orbiting spacecraft: Reconnaissance Orbiter and Global Surveyor.
Researchers led by Francis Nimmo at the University of California, Santa Cruz, US, carried out computer simulations to show that an impact with particular conditions could produce the present-day appearance of Mars. These conditions indicate a space rock about one-half to two-thirds the size of Earth's Moon, striking the Red Planet at an angle of 30 to 60 degrees. This would have produced an elliptical crater. "It's a very old idea, but nobody had done the numerical calculations to see what would happen when a big asteroid hits Mars," said the associate professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC. The team's findings are corroborated by another study in Nature led by Oded Aharonson, associate professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), also US. "The dichotomy is arguably the oldest feature on Mars," Dr Aharonson explained. The feature arose more than four billion years ago, before the rest of the planet's complex geological history was superimposed."
This was about the same time that a much bigger object slammed into the Earth, throwing material into orbit around our infant planet. This material is thought to have coalesced to form the Moon.
Indeed, the coincidence in timing of the formation of our Moon and the Mars dichotomy is probably not coincidental at all.

Tail end

"It happened probably right at the end of the formation of the four terrestrial planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars," said Craig Agnor, a co-author on the Francis Nimmo study. He told BBC News: "We think the planets formed out of a disc of rocks. As the rocks collide, you get bigger rocks and so on. Eventually, you end up with four planets and a lot of rocks - of various sizes. "In terms of the process of the planets sweeping up the last bits of debris, this could have been one of the last big bits of debris." Shock waves from the impact would travel through the planet and disrupt the crust on the other side, causing changes in the magnetic field recorded there.
The predicted changes are consistent with observations of magnetic anomalies in the southern hemisphere, according to Dr Nimmo.
In a third study published in Nature, Jeffrey Andrews-Hanna and Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, and Bruce Banerdt of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California, provide impact evidence from gravitational and topographical signatures on Mars.

 Lesson Learnt From Ants
Assalam-o-alikum
Folks, hope you all are well and excited about the summer vacations that have just begun. Have a happy time!
A wise man once said, “Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can - there will always comes a time when you will be grateful you did.”
I mistakenly kept thinking that here anyone means great achievers, successful businessmen…or may be scholars… But this perception changed when I learnt a lesson from ants! Yes, such tiny creatures taught me a lesson.
Last month when we returned back home after two weeks vacation, I saw lots of ants on the couch in our living room. I wiped them off but minutes would pass and more ants would appear. I kept cleaning them off and fresh mob of ants kept emerging. When my husband returned from work in evening, I asked him to do something to get rid of these ants. But when his effort failed too, he pulled the couch away from the wall and …there lay the reason for this invasion of ants- Food leftovers: nuggets morsels, candy wrappers, cake chunks, biscuits crumbs… Just before we went for vacations, there was a family get-together at our home. Perhaps some of the kids threw these food leftovers behind.
While cleaning the stuff, the above mentioned quote clicked in my mind and I realized what these ants had taught me. These little creatures carrying food weighing much more than their own body’s mass, didn’t care how weighty the food was, nor how far they had to carry it. They are only concerned about accomplishing their goal which is to trace the food using their powerful smell detectors and pick these pieces and carry them to their home.
How brave these ants are? How focused they are and how much determined…and far-sighted too. They keep working all summers to gather food for winters. They know there isn’t abundant food around all the time, so they don’t miss any opportunity to collect their food-that is to get to their goal.
We humans, the wisest of all creations, have lot to learn from these tiny ants. We do set our goals, but we don’t dare to dream big fearing that they are too big for us. And once our goal is set, we tend to lose focus and if a hurdle comes in, we quit our pursuit. These ants don’t. Try obstructing their path and they will take another to get to their goal.
So my dear friends, dream big because “Only as high as we reach can we grow, only as far as we seek can we go, only as deep as we look can we see, only as much as we dream can we be.”
And yes do stay focused and determined towards achieving you objective.
Allah Hafiz
