Thermometers and Babies
Remember that a thermometer reading that is taken under the
arm is 0.6 degrees C lower than body temperature. So if you
have been advised to call the GP when the babies temperature
is greater than 39 degrees C you would only be looking for an
external reading of 38.4 or greater.

Jaundice in the
New-born Baby
Do not
be alarmed if the whites of your baby's eyes and their skin
turns a slight yellow colour after 3 days. This is a condition
called jaundice and is caused because your baby's liver cannot
work fast enough to dispose of a pigment called bilirubin.
Premature babies are more likely to suffer from jaundice.
It usually clears up after a few days and this can be aided by
exposure to sunlight (through a window). You may also be
encouraged to feed your baby as often as possible. Sometimes
when the bilirubin levels are very high a baby may need to be
exposed to controlled amounts of ultra violet light in the
form of phototherapy. Ultra violet breaks down the pigment
levels in the skin. This will be carried out in hospital. Your
baby will be placed in a special crib sometimes in Special
Care. This is a routine treatment and is very effective.

Backing Up Your Email Account Info in
OUTLOOK EXPRESS
Last time we talked about the best way to back
up your Address Book. This month, let's take a look at
backing up your email account information.
This is especially handy if you have more than one account set
up within OE.
With Outlook Express open, go to Tools/Accounts and then click
on the Mail tab at the top of the window (in most cases, this
will already be selected).
Click on one of your accounts to highlight it and then click
on the Export button on the right side. This will open up the
"Export Internet Settings" box which works just like a normal
"Save As" box.
I highly recommend that you create a new folder to hold these
account settings files (I called mine "OE Email Accounts" to
make it easy to remember what's in there).
Once you make the folder (or decide on what existing folder
you want to use for this) and then enter it by double clicking
on the folder's name, click on the "Save" button to create a
file that contains that account's info. This will also take
you right back to the main window where you can repeat the
process for each of your email accounts.

more juice than usual.
Eggs will not crack
Pierce eggs with a sharp pin before boiling. This way
you will prevent them from cracking.
Stop crying while cutting onions
After peeling onions cut in half and soak in water for about 5
minutes. Now, when you cut these onions your eyes will not
water.
To cut hard boiled eggs smoothly
While cutting hard boiled eggs, the egg yolk often tends to
break. To avoid this dip the knife in cold water for a few
seconds and then cut smoothly.
Keep garlic skins from sticking to your hands while peeling
Soak the garlic flakes in a cup of water for five minutes
before peeling.
Potato peel wafers
Potato peels can be made into tasty wafers. Immerse the peel
in warm water to which a pinch of salt is added and then dry
it. Deep fry till crisp and you have delicious potato wafers.
Peeling of Garlic No Problem!
For Garlic it is
difficult to peel off. To do it fast, put some Cooking oil,
and warm it in Oven or over stove, you will find it fast and
easy to peel off.

KAGHAN
Pakistan
is a beautiful country and there are no two opinions in it.
There are 4 provinces in Pakistan namely Sindh, Punjab,
Baluchistan and North West Frontier Province. Pakistan is the
most beautiful country in the world, situated in South Asia.
Its landscape is so attractive and enchanting, that no one can
escape from admiring her beauty. Pakistan has different
landscapes - snow-capped mountains, lush green valleys,
singing streams, mighty rivers, hot deserts, green fields,
sandy coastline, etc, you will find everything in Pakistan
that you wish. There are numerous places where one can spend
holidays peacefully.
A holiday in the Kaghan Valley, the Himalayan hide-away,
north-east of the Hazara district of Pakistan's North West
Frontier Province, is an unforgettable experience.
Its mountains, dales, lakes, water-falls, streams and glaciers
are still in unbelievable pristine state, and unspoiled
paradise. That is why it can be such a deeply satisfying
experience to spend a few days in Kaghan. The Valley extends
for 155 kms. Rising from an elevation of 2,134 meters to its
highest point, the Babusar Pass, at 4,173 meters. Kaghan is at
its best in the summer months (May to September). In May the
temperature is: maximum 11 C and the minimum 3 C. From the
middle of July up to the end of September, the road beyond
Naran, snow-bound throughout the winter, is open right up to
Babusar Pass. Movement is restricted during the monsoon season
also.
The Kaghan Valley is accessible by road from
Rawalpindi/Islamabad and Peshawar. You can drive in your own
or a rented car, taxi, station-wagon or bus to Abbottabad
which is 122 kms. from Rawalpindi and 217 kms. from Peshawar.
Abbottabad is a charming town spread out over several low,
refreshingly green hills.
Balakot is the gateway to the Kaghan Valley. Balakot
has the shrines of Syed Ahmed Shaheed and Ismail Shaheed
Brelvi, the South Asia great freedom fighters.
Shogran About 24 kilometres away from Balakot on
Balakot-Kaghan Road is Kaiwai from where one can go up on
right side of the road to Shogran. Shogran is 8 kilometer from
Kaiwai and a pleasant place at an elevation of 7750 feet above
sea level. It is a small meadow where one can stay for a
night.
Sharan is 12 kilometer away from Paras which is
situated on Balakot-Kanghan Road about 28 kilometers up to
Balakot. Paras is only 4 kilometer away from Kaiwai—the base
camp of Sharan come left across the river Kunar from
Paras bazaar. It is about 9200 feet above sea level and a
thick forest of pine welcomes tourist. This land is still
virgin and there is only two rest houses not a single hotel.
Naran, 23 kms. From Kaghan you reach the half-way
point. Naran also serves as the base for the whole valley.
From here you can ride a jeep or horse or hike in excursions
to several picturesque lakes, valleys and peaks.
Lalazar This is situated 9 miles (12KM) from Naran
towards Babusar pass. It can be considered the best meadow of
North after Fairy Meadows.
Lake Saiful Muluk has a touch of the unreal about it,
nestling 3,200 meters high in the shadow of the Malika Parbat
(Queen of the mountains) 5,291 meters high. You can go boating
on the lake and hear the local legend about Prince Saiful
Muluk who fell in love with a fairy. Further up are quaint
woodland villages; Battakundi, Burawai, Besal Gittidas and
Lalazar.
Babusar Pass The Kaghan Valley is blocked at the end by
high mountains but a pass lets the jeep-able road snake over
into the Chilas Valley. This is the 4,173 meters high Babusar
Pass which commands the whole Kaghan panorama as well as gives
on a clear day, glimpses of the Nanga Parbat (The Naked
Mountain) glistening at 8, 126 meters.
Angling Fishing is the chief sport in Kaghan. Brown
Trout and Mahasher are stocked in the pure silvery waters of
Kunhur River between Kaghan and Naran. The Kunhar river trout
is considered the best in the South Asia. Fishing licenses are
issued by either the Fisheries Department at Naran or the
Trout Hatchery at Shinu.
Speciality Kaghan is noted for its artistically-carved
walnut handicrafts, embroidered shawls, shirts, woolen
blankets and "namdas" (woolen felt rugs).

The
question for our previous issue was:-
What
day is the longest day of the year 2002?
The asnwer is (B) June 22, 2002
The seasons of the year are caused by the 23.5º
tilt of the earth's axis. Because the earth is rotating like a
top or gyroscope, the North Pole points in a fixed direction
continuously -- towards a point in space near the North Star.
But the earth is also revolving around the sun. During half of
the year, the southern hemisphere is more exposed to the sun
than is the northern hemisphere. During the rest of the year,
the reverse is true. At noontime in the Northern Hemisphere
the sun appears high in the sky during summertime, and low
during winter. The time of the year when the sun reaches its
maximum elevation occurs on the summer solstice -- the day
with the greatest number of daylight hours. It typically
occurs on, or within a day or two of, JUN-21 -- the first day
of summer, this year it was 22nd of June. The lowest elevation
occurs about DEC-21 and is the
winter solstice -- the first day of winter, when the night
time hours reach their maximum.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT HEADACHE PATIENTS
DR.MIRZA AZKAR AHMED BAIG,
M.D., MRIPHH(UK)
P.I.M.S, HOSPITAL COMPLEX, ISLAMABAD
|
|
Headache
causes personal suffering, disrupts families and
interferes with work and leisure time. Striking
unpredictably, an attack shatters a sense of
self-control. Medications are often less than effective or
produce unwanted side effects.
Present day myths about headache often induce a sense of
isolation, shame and helplessness. Before healing can
begin, the headache sufferer needs to know that headaches
are a treatable and significant disorder.
Psychological conflicts are generally the result, not the
cause of chronic headache.
Fortunately, recent advances in research are expanding the
medical community's understanding of headache and creating
effective treatments. Headache sufferers have more
treatment options to help them control their
migraine symptoms. Just as important as physician visits
and drugs, the management of headache involves
understanding the headache problem, identifying factors
that precipitate headaches, and working with your
physician in a therapeutic partnership.
Myth # 1: Recurrent headaches mean I
have a psychological problem.
Fact: Headaches are the result of biochemical changes in
the brain. Stress, acting on the nervous system, makes
headaches more likely to occur. The stress may be
chemical, emotional, biological or psychological.
Psychological problems can arise from poorly managed
headaches but, for the most part, psychological problems
do not cause headaches.
Myth # 2: Recurrent headaches are
something I have to learn to live with.
Fact: Headaches can be managed, not cured. With proper
medical care, education and effort, almost all headache
sufferers can reduce the pain and disability of headache.
Myth #3: The only way to stop my
headache is to stop living a normal life. Headaches have
taken over my life.
Fact: Frequent disabling headaches occur in an
unpredictable fashion and create fear of the next headache
attack. As headache frequency increases, the greater the
fear grows. This can lead to a vicious cycle where
anticipation of the next headache becomes the stress that
generates more headaches. Proper headache management
addressing medical care and
lifestyle can break this cycle and restore control.
Myth # 4: Recurrent headaches are
not serious. After all, it's just a headache.
Fact: Most headaches are not life-threatening but
may seriously influence an individual's quality of life
and coping abilities. They strain family life, disrupt
leisure activity and diminish career opportunities.
Myth # 5: My children will suffer
headaches because I do.
Fact: Children learn how to deal with stress from the
behaviors of their parents. Research suggests that the
threshold of handling incoming stimuli to the brain may be
inherited. However, by learning how to manage
stress effectively, children experience coping
alternatives which will boost their resistance to
headache.
Myth # 6: Medication is the only
relief for my headaches.
Fact: Headaches are the result of many interacting
factors. There is no simple answer. Medication is often a
necessary part of headache treatment, but rarely is it the
complete answer. Some medications when used too frequently
can actually cause headaches.
Optimal headache care almost always involves a partnership
between the headache sufferer and the physician.
Myth # 7: Recurrent headaches mean
that I am more likely to have a stroke or brain tumor.
Fact: The sudden onset of frequent, severe headaches
should be investigated by a physician. But research
suggests that heavy cigarette smoking combined with using
birth control pills by women over the age of 30
is more predictive of the possibility of a stroke than the
occurrence of headache. Brain tumor are a rare cause of
headaches.
Myth #8: My headaches are causd by
my neck being out-of-line.
Fact: The status of the neck needs to be medically
evaluated because headache pain my originate with neck and
back problems, However, pain during headache is often
projected or referred to the neck and shoulders.
Usually, tension in the neck is the result, not the cause,
of headache.
Myth #9: Severe headaches must be
migraines.
Fact: There are many different types of headaches. The
diagnosis of most headaches rests solely on the medical
history because there are no tests that substantiate the
diagnosis. Severe headaches should be diagnosed by a
physician to begin proper treatment.
Myth #10: Recurrent headaches are a
female disorder.
Fact: Migraines are influenced by hormonal factors. This
is reflected in the fact that 3 times more women have
migraine than do men. However, 6% of adult men suffer
migraine, and studies show that the disability is not
influenced by gender.
Myth #11: Headaches are an excuse
for getting out of doing what I don't want to do.
Fact: Headaches can be a serious disabling illness.
Quality of life studies of those patients with migraine
demonstrate greater impairment of lifestyle
than with most other chronic illnesses. There are easier
ways of avoiding an undesired activity than with headache.
Myth #12: Headaches are not worth
the time and expense of seeing a physician.
Fact: Not managing headaches is far more costly than
caring for them. Each year the average headache sufferer
loses time and income due to headache disability; these
losses exceed the cost of quality medical treatment.
TAMING THE MIGHTY MIGRAINE
Throbbing. Pounding. Stabbing. Wrenching. However you
describe yours, migraines can be excruciating and
debilitating. Just ask one of the 23 million Americans who
suffers from them.
In this course, we will take a closer look at the mighty
migraine and explore its causes, symptoms, and warning
signs. We will also teach you what you can do if you
suffer from migraines.
What Is A Migraine?
Migraine is a type of headache. They aren't ordinary
headaches. They are vascular headaches that occur when
blood vessels surrounding the brain expand and cause
pulsating pain. Migraines usually occur in episodes or
"attacks." Attacks may last anywhere from 4 hours to as
long as 72 hours.
The pain of a migraine headache is generally moderate to
severe and can disrupt normal activities. It may feel like
it is throbbing or pulsating, and may be located on one
side of the head. The pain is usually aggravated by
activity and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or
sensitivity to light and sound.
Women are three times as likely as men to suffer from
migraines, probably due to hormonal changes they
experience during menstruation and ovulation. In fact, 18%
of all women are affected by this condition.
Migraines are thought to affect up to 20% of the
population. Studies have shown that up to 59% of women and
70% of men who suffer from migraine have never been
diagnosed by a doctor.
Many people who experience migraines have pain and other
symptoms so severe that they only want to lie down in a
dark room and go to sleep. This, obviously, is very
disruptive to their lives. However, migraine can be
treated with medication. Today, there are a number of
drugs available to either help prevent migraines or treat
them after they begin.
