Fibre 'lowers breast cancer risk'
Pre-menopausal women who eat large amounts of fibre could
halve their breast cancer risk, a UK study has suggested.
The University of Leeds researchers, who studied 35,000
women, found those who ate 30g of fibre a day had half the
risk of those who ate less than 20g.
They said women should try to increase their fibre intake.
Experts said the International Journal of Epidemiology study
was more evidence of the benefits of a healthy diet.
The average person in the UK eats 12g of fibre a day.
To eat 30g, a person would need to eat a high-fibre cereal
for breakfast, switch from white or brown bread to wholemeal
and ensure they have five portions of fruit and vegetables a
day.
A team from the University of Leeds Centre for Epidemiology
and Biostatistics have been monitoring the eating habits and
health of more than 35,000 women for seven years.
They were aged 35 to 69 at the beginning of the study. Diet
was assessed using a 217-item food questionnaire.
Processing
Unlike other studies looking at fibre intake and breast
cancer risk, the women studied had a range of diets
including groups who were wholly vegetarian or who did not
eat red meat.
Just under 16,000 women were pre-menopausal when they
entered the study, with 18,000 post-menopausal.
257 pre-menopausal women developed breast cancer during the
study, which was initially funded by the World Cancer
Research Fund.
They were found to be women who had a greater percentage of
energy derived from protein, and lower intakes of dietary
fibre and vitamin C, compared to women who did not develop
cancer.
However, the effect was not seen in the post-menopausal
group, in which 350 developed breast cancer.
The researchers say this may be because fibre affects the
way the body processes and regulates the female hormone
oestrogen.
Levels of the hormone are higher in pre-menopausal women.
Early exposure
Professor Janet Cade, who led the research, said: "Our study
found no protective effect in the older group, but
significant evidence of a link in the pre-menopausal women.
"The relevant exposure may be earlier in life, explaining
why the protective effect was not shown in the
post-menopausal group."
She added: "In addition, post-menopausal women with high
body mass indexes [who are overweight or obese] have an
increased risk of breast cancer.
"Their weight may over-ride any other effects such as
benefits from fibre." Professor Cade added: "It goes along
with the general healthy eating advice to make sure that you
are getting plenty of fibre in your diet through breakfast
cereals, bread, pasta, fruit and vegetables."
Ed Yong, cancer information officer at Cancer Research UK,
said: "We already advise eating a diet rich in fibre to
reduce the risk of bowel cancer. "This study suggests that
it could help protect against breast cancer in younger women
too."
He added: "Until now, the evidence that fibre could reduce
the risk of breast cancer has been inconsistent.
"This study suggests that this is because any protective
effects are limited to women before their menopause.
"It further highlights the importance of eating a healthy
diet for reducing the risk of cancer."
Dr Sarah Cant, of the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer
said separating out the individual effects of different food
was difficult.

2007 Forecast to Be
Hottest Year Ever
Credit Raphael G.
Satter, Associated Press
A resurgent El Nino and persistently high
levels of greenhouse gases are likely to make 2007 the
world's hottest year ever recorded, British climate
scientists said Thursday.
Britain's Meteorological Office said there was a 60
percent probability that 2007 would break the record set
by 1998, which was 1.20 degrees over the long-term
average.|
"This new information represents another warning that
climate change is happening around the world," the
office said.
The reason for the forecast is mostly due to El Nino, a
cyclical warming trend now under way in the Pacific
Ocean. The event occurs irregularly the last one
happened in 2002 and typically leads to increased
temperatures worldwide.
While this year's El Nino is not as strong as it was in
1997 and 1998, its combination with the steady increase
of temperatures due to global warming from human
activity may be enough to break the Earth's temperature
record, said Phil Jones, the director of the Climatic
Research unit at the University of East Anglia.
"Because of the warming due to greenhouse gases, even a
moderate warming event is enough to push the global
temperatures over the top," he said.
"El Nino is an independent variable," he said. "But the
underlying trends in the warming of the Earth is almost
certainly due to the release of carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere."
El Nino can sometimes lead to milder weather, such as in
the in the northeastern United States or the Atlantic
Ocean, which is likely to see fewer hurricanes this
year. However, it can also increase the severity of
weather-related disasters, such as typhoons in the
Philippines or drought in southern Africa and Australia,
a country that is already suffering through its longest
dry spell on record.
Environmental groups said the report added weight to the
movement to control greenhouse gases.
"The evidence that we're doing something very dangerous
with the climate is now amassing," said Campaign against
Climate Change coordinator Philip Thornhill.
"We need to put the energy and priority (into climate
change) that is being put into a war effort. It's a
political struggle to get action done and these
reports help," Thornhill said

You
will be getting lots of emails about the event. So i
will try to be as brief as possible. First of all I
congratulate you and other CP organizers for such a
professional event. Now some suggestions:
1- Schedule of the event should be
followed strictly. It was mentioned that the event would
start at 4 pm then it should have started at that time.
2- Some speakers were not maintaining
their allotted time. The moderator should remind the
speakers about their time.
3- Some volunteers should be there to
guide the crowd during prayer breaks and dinner. This
will avoid such chaotic situations as we saw.
For future seminars, I will be glad to
help CP organize the event. And I guess there will be
many others also ready to help and participate if asked.
Best regards, Mohammad Asim Siddiqui

Internet Fraud:
How to Avoid Internet Investment Scams
The Internet serves as an excellent tool for investors,
allowing them to easily and inexpensively research
investment opportunities. But the Internet is also an
excellent tool for fraudsters. That's why you should always
think twice before you invest your money in any
opportunity you learn about through the Internet.
This alert tells you how to spot different types of Internet
fraud, what the SEC is doing to fight Internet investment
scams, and how to use the Internet to invest wisely.
Navigating the Frontier: Where the Frauds Are
The Internet allows individuals
or companies to communicate with a large audience without
spending a lot of time, effort, or money. Anyone can reach
tens of thousands of people by building an Internet web
site, posting a message on an online bulletin board,
entering a discussion in a live "chat" room, or sending mass
e-mails. It's easy for fraudsters to make their messages
look real and credible. But it's nearly impossible for
investors to tell the difference between fact and fiction.
Online Investment Newsletters Hundreds
of online investment newsletters have appeared on the
Internet in recent years. Many offer investors seemingly
unbiased information free of charge about featured companies
or recommending "stock picks of the month." While legitimate
online newsletters can help investors gather valuable
information, some online newsletters are tools for fraud.
Some companies pay the people who write online newsletters
cash or securities to "tout" or recommend their stocks.
While this isn't illegal, the federal securities laws
require the newsletters to disclose who paid them, the
amount, and the type of payment. But many fraudsters fail to
do so. Instead, they'll lie about the payments they
received, their independence, their so-called research, and
their track records. Their newsletters masquerade as sources
of unbiased information, when in fact they stand to profit
handsomely if they convince investors to buy or sell
particular stocks.
Some online newsletters falsely claim to independently
research the stocks they profile. Others spread false
information or promote worthless stocks. The most notorious
sometimes "scalp" the stocks they hype, driving up the price
of the stock with their baseless recommendations and then
selling their own holdings at high prices and high profits.
To learn how to separate the good from the bad, read our
tips for checking out newsletters. E-mail Spams Because
"spam" junk e-mail is so cheap and easy to create,
fraudsters increasingly use it to find investors for bogus
investment schemes or to spread false information about a
company. Spam allows the unscrupulous to target many more
potential investors than cold calling or mass mailing. Using
a bulk e-mail program, spammers can send personalized
messages to thousands and even millions of Internet users at
a time. How to Use the Internet to Invest Wisely If you want to invest wisely
and steer clear of frauds, you must get the facts. Never,
ever, make an investment based solely on what you read in an
online newsletter or bulletin board posting, especially if
the investment involves a small, thinly-traded company that
isn't well known. And don't even think about investing on
your own in small companies that don't file regular reports
with the SEC, unless you are willing to investigate each
company thoroughly and to check the truth of every statement
about the company. For instance, you'll need to:
get financial statements from the company and be
able to analyze them;
verify the claims about new product developments or
lucrative contracts;
call every supplier or customer of the company and
ask if they really do business with the company; and
check out the people running the company and find
out if they've ever made money for investors before.
And it doesn't stop there. For a more detailed list of
questions you'll need to ask and have answered read
Ask Questions. And always watch out for
tell-tale signs of fraud.
Here's how you can use the internet to help you invest
wisely:
Start With the SEC's EDGAR Database The
federal securities laws require many public companies to
register with the SEC and file annual reports containing
audited financial statements. For example, the following
companies must file reports with the SEC:
All U.S. companies with more than 500 investors
and $10 million in net assets; and
All companies that list their securities on The
Nasdaq Stock Market or a major national stock exchange
such as the New York Stock Exchange.
Anyone can access and download these reports from the
SEC's EDGAR
database for free. Before you invest in a company, check
to see whether it's registered with the SEC and read its
reports. But some companies don't have to register their
securities or file reports on EDGAR. For example, companies
raising less than $5 million in a 12-month period may be
exempt from registering the transaction under a rule known
as "Regulation A." Instead, these companies must file a hard
copy of the "offering circular" with the SEC containing
financial statements and other information. Also, smaller
companies raising less than one million dollars don't have
to register with the SEC, but they must file a "Form D."
Form D is a brief notice which includes the names and
addresses of owners and stock promoters, but little other
information. If you can't find a company on EDGAR, call the
SEC at (202) 551-8090 to find out if the company filed an
offering circular under Regulation A or a Form D. And be
sure to request a copy.
The difference between investing in companies that register
with the SEC and those that don't is like the difference
between driving on a clear sunny day and driving at night
without your headlights. You're asking for serious losses if
you invest in small, thinly-traded companies that aren't
widely known just by following the signs you read on
Internet bulletin boards or online newsletters.
Online Investment Fraud: New Medium, Same Old Scam The types of investment
fraud seen online mirror the frauds perpetrated over the
phone or through the mail. Remember that fraudsters can use
a variety of Internet tools to spread false information,
including bulletin boards, online newsletters, spam, or chat
(including Internet Relay Chat or Web Page Chat). They can
also build a glitzy, sophisticated web page. All of these
tools cost very little money and can be found at the
fingertips of fraudsters.
Consider all offers with skepticism. Investment frauds
usually fit one of the following categories: The "Risk-Free" Fraud "Exciting, Low-Risk
Investment Opportunities" to participate in exotic-sounding
investments such as wireless cable projects, prime bank
securities, and eel farms have been offered through the
Internet. But no investment is risk-free. And sometimes the
investment products touted do not even exist they're
merely scams. Be wary of opportunities that promise
spectacular profits or "guaranteed" returns. If the deal
sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. The SEC Is
Tracking Fraud
The SEC actively investigates allegations of Internet
investment fraud and, in many cases, has taken quick action
to stop scams. We've also coordinated with federal and state
criminal authorities to put Internet fraudsters in jail.
Here's a sampling of recent cases in which the SEC took
action to fight Internet fraud: If you believe that you have
been the victim of a securities-related fraud, through the
Internet or otherwise, or if you believe that any person or
entity may have violated or is currently violating the
federal securities laws, you can submit a complaint using
our online
complaint form or email us at
enforcement@sec.gov.

Sweet Fruits of Adversity
Dear friends, hope you and your dear ones are all hale and
hearty.
I will start today by sharing a story with you. One day a
man found a cocoon of a butterfly with a small opening in
it. He watched the butterfly struggling to force its body
through that little fissure. After struggle of hours, the
creature seemed to have stopped, making no further progress,
as if it had done all that it could. So the man decided to
help the butterfly. He snipped off the remaining bit of the
cocoon to let the butterfly emerge easily. But the baby
butterfly had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The
man hoped that the body's swelling will reduce and the wings
would enlarge to be able to support the body. Time passed
but it never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its
life crawling around with a swollen body and withered wings,
never being able to fly.
Nature has its own ways. When the baby butterfly struggles
to get out of the crack in the cocoon, the fluid from the
body of the butterfly pushes into its wings, thus reducing
the swelling and causing wings to become strong. It is God's
way to enable a butterfly to be able to fly once it is out
of cocoon. But in the story, the man did not understand it
and hence in his kindness and eagerness, made the butterfly
handicap.
Fellows, men's life here is this world is not a bed of
roses. It is a continuous struggle. Adverse situations come
and go. Most people sink in depression and despondency
during hard times, While few struggle and rise out
successfully from these troubles. Allah Almighty does not
burden any one beyond his strength. If we find our self
caught in a difficult situation, we must practice
forbearance. These testing periods are necessary for our
development. They give us chance to think about our self and
realize our abilities. They enable us to know about our
hidden talents. Take these hard times as testing periods and
learn from the experience. Wise people always rise wiser
from these unpleasant phases because they take lessons from
them.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.
For Allah it is no big deal to make our lives a smooth
sailing. But He wants us to be strong. Had we been allowed
to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would
cripple us. History shows that all great men faced many
adverse situations but that made them strong. That is why
they were able to fly!
Dear fellows, everyone faces adversity and must find ways to
persevere through the oppressing moments of life. Life has
to keep going. The adverse phases culminate in brighter
moments and make the bearer stronger. Shakespeare rightly
said, "Sweets are the fruits of adversity". Till we
meet next
