An amateur takes part in the sport for pleasure. A professional is a
man or a woman for whom sport is a profession. No doubt you know the
name of professional cricketers, tennis players, boxers, and so on.
A sport turning into a profession is not a modern phenomenon. In the
1850s, people already made their living as sportsmen. Originating
for the most part from England, the specialty of these sportsmen was
running; they excelled particularly over the short distances.
Such professionals also confronted each other over longer distances.
They prepared for their races carefully and trained for a long time.
These professional sportsmen hoped to earn a prize of money as
reward for their victory or a good placing. At this time, most
people who took part in a sport continued to compete for nothing.
Nowadays, the difference between an amateur and professional is not
always easy to make. A large number of amateurs receive bonuses,
money to cover necessary expenses while taking part in their
favorite sport.
