VIE FOR INTER HOTELS FILA MILLENNIUM BASKETBALL CHALLENGE By Parwaiz Imam |
| RIYADH, August 8
– Eight teams would vie for the top honors in the Inter hotels gala, the first
conference, of the Fila millennium basketball challenge 3 in 1 hosted and lined up by the
Sheraton Riyadh hotel and towers which is all set to blast off at 5 p.m. on Friday, August
11. In a meeting held recently at the Oasis room, the Riyadh Inter Hotel Sports Committee decided unanimously to hold the 13rh Riyadh Annual Inter Hotels basketball tournament 2000 first. The Inter Company (bonafide) and the 6-feet and below category will follow at a later date to be announced shortly thus giving a chance for other teams interested to join the action ample time to think about. This 3 in 1 prestigious event is sponsored by Fila shoes with Pepsi Cola, a co-sponsor for the last twelve years. Power Horse, the energy drink, courtesy of their country manager Abbet Quinto has also joined in support this time. To gear up, the Sheraton court was refurbished thanks to the combined efforts of Dan De Jesus and Marvin Zita’s boys of Saudi Oger with full assistance of Kaleem Ghouri, director of engineering and Jess Lumanog. The new board ring was installed, the fence was expanded to give way for some bleachers for the spectators and rubber flooring was repainted. Neo Egamino of Intercontinental hotel has lended the electronic digital timer while Alex Sanchez group of referees conducted the clinic for the contesting teams. They are defending champion Marriott, Al Khozama, Al Faisaliah, Intercontinental, Riyadh Palace, Minhal Holiday Inn, newcomer Olaya Palace and host Sheraton. Olaya Holiday Inn has yet to confirm its entry although their fans and the players are eager to join the club of excitement, fun and brotherhood. For the opening, a brief colorful parade of the participating teams has been planned with a special prize for the best in uniform side. Invited guest of honors and embassy officials would grace the occasion. To make things lively for all, some minor sponsors have agreed for the give-away raffles during the matches for all. The registration date for the Inter Company (Bonafide) and the 6-feet & Below category has been extended to August 25. Interested can contact Carlos D.
