MONDALA SHINES FOR MARRIOTT IN INTER HOTELS FILA MILLENNIUM BASKETBALL CHALLENGE 2000
By Parwaiz Imam

RIYADH, August 15, 2000 – Tres Mondala, the three times MVP, not only played a major role in Marriott victory over Intercontinental by 98 – 85 but also scored the first shot that won for him one pair of Fila shoes and then romped home with a whooping 44 points in the opening game as the 13th annual Riyadh Inter hotels basketball tournament a part of the Fila Millennium Challenge 2000 got off to a flying start.
Despite the strong defense put up by Neo Egamino Intercon line up comprising of Ayan Dibaratum, Joel Triunfo, Robert Trillanes and Edwin Esplago, Marriott boys were able to penetrate their way in grabbing the ball and shooting it from outside the shaded rainbow. Their Rey Macapagal, Ed Manansala, Leo Nebres and Mark Swing also played well to see their team leading in the first half by 46-39.

When the whistle for the start of the second half began, Dibaratum shot his first three points and then the clash geared up for an exciting finish but the heights and experience of the winning team played a dominant factor.
In the second encounter of the day, Riyadh Palace and Minhal Holiday Inn also delighted the fans with a thrilling game which the former won by 50 – 43. The losing side led by C. B. Kannangara had Gerald De Guzman, Dela Pena, Sta. Maria, Salvador and Pagarungan.
They tried to repulse Riyadh Palace Desnie Ryes who is on top form at the center with energetic Jhun Revilla, strongman Rex Testado, Teddy Natividad, Rodel Supan and Donnel Samaniego. It was a see saw battle and Minhal to some extent closed the gap in the second half but they were not able to catch up with the lead that the jubilant winning side has taken earlier.
The Fila Millennium Basketball Challenge 2000 is being played at the Sheraton new court with support coming from Sodas Sports – the sole distributor of Fila shoes, Pepsi Cola and Power Horse Energy Drink. Thanks to the Sheraton management, they have given a chance for the expatriates and Saudis alike to come and witness the entertainment free of charge.
