22, 2000 – In a close thrilling finish, host Sheraton overcame a strong challenge
from the new comer Olaya Palace by margin of 71 to 69 in the 13th Annual Riyadh
Inter-hotels basketball tournament, the first part of the 3 in 1 Fila Millennium Challenge
festival 2000, being hosted by Sheraton Riyadh hotel and towers. The losers headed by its team manager Muhammed Ateeq fought bravely against Walid Khayat’s Sheraton men. It was Juanito Payumo, the point guard of Olaya Palace who scored the first shot and won a special gift of Panasonic cordless phone from Promotion and Supply Services Company limited. As their players were young blood and aggressive, this proved to be the dominant factor in the ensuing cardiac arrest game against the powerful host which also composed of some young lads in their line up of Bong Salvador, Bhoy Morales, Rommel Carlos, Johnny Buan, Gilfredo Alingayao, Albert Irreverre, Allan Barcelon, Rino Delos Reyes, Rex Capati, captain Rene D. Reyes, Jezreel Tabisora, Marlon Egamino, Melchor Costales, Amiel Reyes, Rommel Tatson and point guard Marvin Leyva. They all had to work hard to prove their best against the brave fighting opponents which had Roger Navarro, towering Jeng Sumar, Jaunito Payumo Edwin Dela Cruz, Sigfred Bocson, Gilbert Enteria, Kram, Bodjec Dimaapi, Renante Lumagui, Roque Sacare, Mark Marit, Joel Caragui, Arthur Fernandez, Domingo Sara and Anthony Jaya Prakash Although, the losers scored the first basket and followed it up by another without any resistance for the first two minutes but it was Tabisora two consecutive basket that sparked and ignited the energy of the Sheraton which saw first half ending in their favor 40-21. With double digit advantage, the victors looked over confident at the buzzer of the second half and immediately the Palace young rookie dashing Kram made an alternate three points shot which signaled the start of the fierce battle. Thanks to Ateeq guidance, they gained their composure and gave the winning side a temporary shock by their blistering retaliation that sliced the score to a mere two points difference. The luck did not favor them as in the dying five seconds, they had the rebounded ball in the Sheraton’s court but were not able to release it within the time limit and the buzzer rang thus dashing their hopes. Amongst the guests who witnessed the exciting action were Thomas Boesch, the acting general manager of the hotel who is an avid supporter of the game and Mariano A. Dumia, the minister of Philippine Embassy in Riyadh. The Fila Millennium Basketball Challenge 2000 is being played at the Sheraton new court with support coming from Sodas Sports – the sole distributor of Fila shoes, Pepsi Cola and Power Horse Energy Drink. It is organized by Riyadh Inter-hotels Sports Committee. The registration for the Inter-company (Bonafide) and 6-feet & below category is still on.
