2000 In the first day opening matches, Lazurde Gold and SCC Janbaz began brightly
in the 16-overs NCMS Super Cup cricket tournament, which began at the floodlit Saudi
Ceramic Company (SCC) cricket ground. Thanks to the courtesy of Shujauddin Ansari, the operations manager, the NCMS Catering Service is sponsoring this tournament, said Imran Yusuf of the organizing committee. A total of nineteen teams divided into four groups are battling it out for the NCMS Super Cup 2000. The contesting teams are in Group A Young Fighters, SCC Friends, Indian Friends, Al Rabie; Group B Challenger, Ali Jan XI, Saudi Carpet, AIG Group, NCMS; Group C Lazurde Gold, Crescent club, Ghori II, Raavi Club; Group D Fipco Power, Bindiyal, Saudi Plastic and Detasad. In the first match, Lazurde Gold beat Ghori II by 14 runs. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the former made 130 for 9 in the allotted overs. Their main scorers were Harsha 28, Nishanth 27, Amila 13 and Kushan 13. Abid captured four wickets for 41 runs. Amir had two for 35 while Rauf picked up one for 17 runs. Chasing the target, the losers were bowled out for 117. Abid hit a fine 57 but to no avail. Zulfiqar added 16 runs. For the winners, Gayan took four wickets for 26. Suranga Dias claimed two for 29. One each went to Suranga and Kushan for 11 and 32 runs. SCC Janbaz, in the second clash of the night, defeated Young Fighters by 39 runs. The latter won the toss and batted first, making 143 all out in 15.4 overs. Amongst the runs were Shahid Niazi 21, Rashid Wasi 19, Hanif Butt 17, Harvindar Kumar 14, Dil Nawaz 12 and Shakeel 12. Abdul Razzaq bagged four victims for 40. Jabbar got three for 33. Jehangir and Ijaz shared one wicket each for 19 and 23 runs. In reply, Young Fighters batsmen could not fare well and were all out for 10 with six overs still to be bowled. Their main run makers were Jabbar 24, Muhammed Arif 19 and Jehangir 16. For the victors, Wasi ended with four wickets for 35. Nawaz and Adnan shared two each for 34 and 8 runs. In the opening ceremony proceedings, prior to the action, Yousuf, the chairman SCC cricket committee and the tournament director made the welcoming speech. He thanked the chief guest, the SCC general manager Suleiman Al Khelaifi and the management for their support. Words of appreciation were also aired for the NCMS led by V. S. Johney - operations manager, Shujauddin Ansari - area manager and for the Omer Yassin SCC sports coordinator. The chief guest while welcoming all the teams, guests and the fans, praised the organizing committee and the sports coordinator for keeping alive the sporting activities in the company. He stressed the necessity of sports in daily life and pointed out that it is very essential for the health and relaxation of the human body after a hard days work. He assured the sports loving fans of his full support for this gala and then amidst loud applause declared the tourney opened by hitting the ball, which was bowled by Yassin. In addition to Yousuf, the other organizing committee members are Shafat Ahmed, Amir Khan, Sufi Nazir Ahmed, Zafar Iqbal and Nadeem Kirmani. |
