RIYADH, Nov. 21, 2000 The Conquerors squad enjoyed a mix fortune in
Class-B, first surprising the defending champions Intruder Strike in the first encounter
of the first round of the day but then went down in the second session to El Seif II as
the fourth week action ended in a thrilling manner in the Power Darts 2000 tournament
being played at the Sheraton Riyadh Hotel and Towers bowling alley.
Conquerors victory foiled Intruders bid to keep its record clean. Rod Viray captured
the first single against Medel Legaspi but Cris Rodolfo avenged in the second against Art
Gotengco for a tie. The winning side then swept two successive wins. However, they again
lost the last two singles to their opponents, making it 3-all. Conquerors grabbed the
first double and continued their domination in the last two doubles as well. The Intruders
took the last leg but it was too late.
The El Seif I collected a two fold victory in a spectacular performance at the expense of
the Spice Boyz partners. The Spice Boyz II became the early victims (8-7) followed by the
more seasoned Spice Boyz I in the second game. The Ace Darters on the other hand lost to
them 4-11 in the preliminary action but later snatched back a victory from the Spice Boyz
II by 10-5 for a days square 1-1 record. The teams will now meet again on Friday for
the last round robin clash before they get in to the tough stepladder contest.
Rookie team Ericsson A2618s bagged their first triumph over fellow Saudi Ericsson (SE) in
the first match. Danny Dela Pena unleashed two toners to capture the first single against
the tough Reginald Singaya. Rudy Balambao of SE answered back by stopping Ric Razo from a
D20 out shot in the second single. Ernie Ramos and Phil Balsan retaliated in the third and
fourth against Alvin De Leon and Vic Gimpisao for a 2-point pull away but only to find
Ravenal Arce and Mar Fernandez surrendering to John Damaso and Noli Jaraplasan of the SE
in the last two singles, ending the score at 3-all. The more conditioned A2618s made an
excellent pairing in the doubles, finally setting aside the SE by 9-6.
In the second session, KSU Kamandag also received their first winning debut over Ericsson
A2618a (12-3) but lost the first to Aero Darters (3-12). The latter brought home two
important victories here. The Aero also defeated El Seif II in the second game 11-4. The
latter recorded an impressive win against the powerful Conquerors 9-6. Iskan Knights on
the other hand walked away with 1-1 record for the day, losing the first action to Aero
3-13 but later notching the second against SE 9-6.
Top team from the single elimination round in Class-B will automatically clinch the first
final berth while the rest will contest for the second through a tough stepladder one-loss
knockout format.
T80 producers of the day were Abet Apon of Ace Darters, Sandy Alegre of El Seif I and Mar
Fernandez of Ericsson A2618s. Willy Paz registered another 16 darts finish on a singles
match against Ely Martos of Spice Boyz I. Highest out shot was recorded by Alfie Tomas of
Intruder Strike at 104.
