Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, June 15, 2001 To the surprise of all, the
underdog Fayez Ahmed Qadri came from no where to defeat Abdul Mohsin Bin Braik, once the
champion of Andhra Pradesh state in India by 25-15 to capture the first Riyadh Open Carom
championship, organized by Deccan Cultural Association (DCA), at the Al Hyatt restaurant
banquet hall.
However, Braik did not go empty
handed as in the doubles playing with Shaukat Khan, they beat M. A. Saleem and Mir Shujaat
Ali by 25-14 to clinch the crown in the doubles later on in the night.
From the day one, DCA, an active social and cultural organization in the capital city,
lined up this gala for the carom players, the response was encouraging. This was evident
from the huge and unprecedented turnout. A total of sixty players, some of who were
professionals and have represented their states back in India, competed from June 2-5 at
the new refurbished hall of Al Hyatt restaurant at Haiyah Al Wazarat area.
Such is the popularity of the game amongst expatriates in the Kingdom that a total of 800
witnessed the climax and the awarding. Encouraged with this fine response, DCA office
bears led by A. A. Shamim Khan chairman, Ziaur Rehman president, Mirza Navid
Baig general secretary, Shaker Siddiqui, Jameel Khan joint secretary have
announced that they hold one-day tournament on August 15 on the Indias Independence
day which was well received by all.
Speaking on this occasion, chairman Khan said, "the organization will work to promote
talents amongst the expatriate community by conducting indoor games and music, art and
cultural activities. He advised that the main purpose of organizing the tournament was to
encourage the young members of the community to utilize their talents fruitfully during
their leisure time.
DCA president Rahman stressed on the popularity and said that that when this event was
officially announced, he received telephone calls even from Jeddah and Dammam to schedule
the event during weekend to enable them to participate. He concluded by saying the DCA
organizers would keep this kind when lining up another tourney.
In the end, Siddiqui, the joint secretary winded up the proceedings by a vote of thanks to
all the players and audience. |
