THRILLING VICTORY OVER KFSH IN HITTT TENNIS By Parwaiz Imam |

1, 2000 In a nail biting finish at the King Fahad National Guard Hospital (KFNGH)
recreation center this week, the strong Riyadh Military Hospital (RKH) squad survived a
jolt but in the end recorded a thrilling win over KFSH1 in an exclusive ladies C2 category
by a narrow margin of 32 31 in the HITTT tennis tournament. Despite losing, KFSH1 steered by their non-playing captain Vila G. Lector, made a gallant effort and did put up fine performance to the surprise of many against the favored side. The victors took the lead when team captain Tita Butterworth and Merle Natividad convincingly defeated Amy Valdez and Nanette Maynes 8-4. However, this was leveled when talented teen-ager Beth Quilacio showed poise and determination in overcoming Debbie Nuguera 8-3. In their third encounter, RKH went ahead again when strong combination of Gigi Tendencia and Davina Robles traded a variety of shots against Sol Marasigan and Maica, Beths sister and the other teen-ager tennis discovery of HITTT before winning 8-5. The losers once again grabbed the lead back in the next encounter as Maynes engaged Joan Bunda in long baseline rallies and emerged victorious 8-5. The audience who had braved a nasty sandstorm during the entire encounter was now filled with excitement as a single point separated both teams at this stage with one match to go between assistant captain Lalaine Asuncion - Amy Arat and Mhel Camarse - Bernadette Vilan. The former quickly built a sizable lead over their less experienced rivals but somehow Camarse and Vilan while struggling, managed to close the gap at 6-7. The two came closer still when they forced a sudden-death game and match point at 40-all. With the final outcome on the line, it was RKH pair that won 8-6. In the ladies C1 category, Security Forces Hospital (SFH) snatched a victory from RKH by 27 26 margin at the Oasis residential compound. It was a seesaw affair till the very last point. The winners took a comfortable lead of eight points with wins by Rose Leong - Agnes Vila over Leony Galpao - Tess Acosta 8-3 and Malou Sarmiento assistant captain Fanny Minas over Lucy Manzanares captain Riva Dilla 8-5. The next two encounters saw RKH coming back strongly. Genevieve Chu battered Nina Sanchez 8-2. The latter failed to find here touches and looked out of form as she has just returned from her fathers burial from Philippines. Ruth Sotelo routed Fatima Basilio 8-1 with a masterful display of tennis as RKH narrowed the lead to 24-19 with a match to go. In the decider, captain Babes Vasquez Fanny Minas of SFH went up against the two talented and upcoming players, Jelvise Kelly Ruby Cruz. The former tandem showed strong will in overcoming their deficit and registering an impressive 8-2 win to the delight of their supporters. The days last action saw KFNGH winning easily over KFSH by 30 24 also in the C1 category. Mel Rabago beat Venus Alegre 8-4. In the first doubles, Jeth Gumaru and Jomaimah Ancheta exasperated captain Au Gutierrez and Lea Ontar with some accurate lobs and won 8-2. It was in the second single that KFSH recorded its first victory. Their top star, Gemma Sahibil proved to be more consistent and prevailed 8-4 over Lori Tamayo. It was a long struggle for both the baseline players. Rose Santos and Fe Roxas, in the next, set aside Nitz Leis and Adelyn Aquino of KFNGH 8-2 with score now standing at 22-all. The decisive battle was set between Remy Viado Jeth Gumaru and captain Amor Robles - Geline Suarez of KFSH. Both the competing pairs fought bravely but in the end, Gumaru Viado of KFNGH won 8-2.
