TEAMS SURGE ON IN HITTT TENNIS By Parwaiz Imam |
RIYADH, August
8, 2000 The teams of King Fahad National Guard Hospital (KFNGH) may be on the
thresh hold of capturing the championship in C-1 category but King Faisal Specialist
Hospital (KFSH) is breathing down its neck as HITTT 2000 tennis gala enters the home
stretch. In their last outings this week, KFNGH overpowered Insurance (IH) with the score
of 35 29 while KFSH overcame King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) by a
margin of 35-33. Snatching win for the victorious
side were Ayman Sadawi who beat Albert Ebuen 8-3. Then assistant captain Ariel Bascon
joining hands with Winnie Tablizo survived a close shave, winning in the end 8-6 against
Ernie Cordial and his partner Billy Pagatpatan, the assistant captain. Marching on, Teody
Bautista and Mike Manangan set aside Lorenz Rubia and Mike Dimapilis 8-6. For IH, it was Cordial who managed to edge out KFNGH team captain Robert Lucero 8-7. Mike Arevalo teaming up with his captain Emil Pulido got the better of Manangan and Jun Nalicat 8-4. In the second clash, KFSH drew first blood, taking the first two tightly contested sets to the delight of their supporters who thronged to witnessed the classic action. Following the trail, their Lino Pamaran bounced back to beat Jun Lazaga 8-5. The tandem of Roland Flora, an active civic leader in the Filipino community here and his partner captain Benjie Ringor struggled a bit but emerged victorious in a tie-break 8-7 over Ed Diesta, the captain and assistant captain Rico Gapuen. The losers erased their four-point lead and built a one-point advantage when Jun Sanchez and Erwin Abuan won their doubles match 8-3 against Jojo Santos and Lester Jumagdao. However, in the fourth set, the reliable Joe Aday of KFSH delivered by beating Diesta in another tight match 8-7. With the score now tied at 27-all into the fifth and the last set, all eyes from both camps were glued on the captain Lito Anulacion and Bong Aduca (KFSH) squaring off against Abuan and Lazaga. They engaged in furious exchanges stroke after stroke before taking their side to a fine win. On the other side in the B-1 category, KKIAH rebounded from a stinging loss to KFSH a week earlier by upsetting the erstwhile undefeated Security Forces Hospital (SFH) at the Oasis compound 39 30. The former kept a well-balanced assault in overwhelming their rivals. Leading their side to victory saw Willie Tecson outlasting the veteran Ely Sabello 8-5. The serve and volleyer Randy Cepe defeated the consistent base liner Rene Soriano 8-6. In the doubles, assistant captain Jess Malto and Mahmoud Sindab edged out Manny Albes and Sabello 8-6 while the pair of Malto and Joe Carrido shocked the captain and assistant captain tandem of Herman Honrado and Noli Mendoza 8-5. For SFH, Edwin Ranoza and Honrado brought some relieve as they breeze past Ric Camara and Carrido 8-7. Of the last encounter in this category, KFSH shook off a strong KFNGH by 36 27 in their second round tiff despite the home advantage to the losing side. The latter started off by winning the first two sets. Rey Beredo teamed up with Jun Castro in trouncing Roger Loares and Pete Sampana 8-6. Next, it was captain Louie Fantone and Rene Pacson who won by an identical score against captain Romy Maborang and Manny Lector, the current HITTT chairman. However, this was as far as they could go, as it was all KFSH affairs thereafter. Ernie Serrano crushed Llyod Schawdsmidt 8-2. Buddies Sonny Wahab and Jay Grajeda traded powerful shots before downing their opponents Alvin Fabila and Eric Abalos 8-5. In the last single match, Rene Suarez set aside Michael Adib 8-4.
