ELUCKY STANLEY, DAGHFAG ADVANCE IN EL FALEH DESERT CLASSIC TOP FLIGHT SINGLES

RIYADH, Nov. 7, 2000  – It was lucky day for Mark Stanley as he won without action while on the other side, HussamAl Daghfag, a local city player, beat Salim Bitar 6-4, 6-0 to move into the last eight in the Class-A singles at the 25th El Faleh Sports House annual Desert Classic Open Tennis tournament being played at the hotel Intercontinental recreation center.
Stanley of Great Britain and the recreation manager at the Intercon hotel was given a walkover against the top seed Badr Mogaiyel. The Saudi Arabian International did not turn up for the match as his mother was sick, said Farouk El Laithy, the tournament director. Othman Al Enezi, another Saudi former national team player, baring any upsets, now stands a good chance of capturing this prestigious in this category. Along with Joey Samia, he has already won the Class-A doubles title here couple of days ago.
Ryuichi Iwamoto, Noel Mejia and Al Enezi also entered the quarterfinals, winning by default over their respective rivals Kit Sagnit, Omar Al Thaqib and Faez Assad.
With little amendments to the rules, two categories – Under-12 and Uner-14 have been lined up for the juniors. In the Under-12, four matches were completed with all the winners moving into the last sixteen. Yasan Al Otaibi beat Ben Harris 1-4, 4-2, 4-1. Charles Beyrouthy down Praveen Soundarajan 4-2, 4-5, 4-0. Renato Jr. Suarez defeated O. De Guzman 4-2, 2-4, 5-3. Lastly, Muhammed Ali Riani ousted Kim Santo 0-4, 4-1, 4-1.
In the Under-14, the winners moved to the quarterfinals. Hamza Iqbal eliminated Ahmed Al Waleed 5-3, 5-32 and Michel Dela Cruz stopped Nawaf Al Faraj 4-2, 5-3.
The tournament is mainly sponsored by El Faleh Sports House. Other companies supporting are Pepsi, Power Horse Energy Drink, Saudi Globalstar, SGB Dabal for scaffolding, Promoaction and DDB.
