RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, November 14, 2000 It is an all-Saudi affair
for the Class-A single championship. In their semifinal matches, Othman Al Enezi, a former
national team player and Saeed Al Shabib won easy victories over their respective rivals
Noel Mejia and Eduardo De Souza in the 25th El Faleh Sports House annual Desert
Classic Open Tennis tournament being played at the hotel Intercontinental recreation
center.
In the first semi, Shabib, a local
city player had no trouble eliminating Portuguese De Souza by 6-3, 6-1 score. In the
other, the older Filipino Mejia was no match for the favorite Enezi. The latter won 6-1,
6-2.
Of the Class-B action, it was a double fete for Shabib as he also entered the final of
this category. But, this time it was not an easy ride as Adam Socor fought well to take
the second set 6-3 after having the lost the first 4-6. In the decider, the Filipino
looked tired and lost the third set 6-1. The victor will be meeting Hicham Riani, the
Tunisian coach of the Saudi national tennis team in the final showdown. The Tunisian set
aside Abdullah Sughaiyer 6-4, 7-6.
Filipino Robert Derequito and a Saudi Ahmed Sulaiman are all set to clash for the Class-C
singles title. In their semifinal encounters, Derequito ousted Omar Al Swaidan 6-0, 6-2
and Sulaiman stopped Alan Roldan 6-4, 6-3.
There was a surprise in store in
the Over-45 singles as in the quarterfinal, Rodolfo Ancheta scored an upset win over the
defending champion Mario Flores 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. Of the other results, another local player,
Nasser Al Shaye defeated Ramon Flores 6-0, 6-3. Brian Robinson beat Najeh Dawas 6-4, 6-0
and Leo Malinao down Ky Le Hoang 6-1, 6-1. In semifinals the next day, Shaye beat Ancheta
7-5, 6-2 and Malinao set aside Robinson 6-3, 6-4.
Two favorites, Aamer Javed of Pakistan and Abdulaziz Abu Rasheed made it to the final of
the juniors Under-14. The organizers have made little amendments in the scoring system for
these youngsters in the two juniors categories. Javed, in his race to the final, ousted
Michell Dela Cruz 4-1, 4-1.
Rasheed, a local promising star, made short work of Abdelhamid Riani, winning 4-0, 4-1.
However, the latter, playing in the Under-12 as well, beat Angelo Ray Suarez 4-2, 4-1 to
earn a place in the final. His
opponent here is British Ben Harries who also sailed easily over Renato Jr. Suarez 4-1,
4-0.
The tournament is mainly sponsored by El Faleh Sports House. Other companies supporting
